The kitchen in this house was a narrow room at the back, with a separate reception room beside it that the family used for storage. The brief was one room where the children could do homework while dinner was cooking.

We took out the dividing wall in week one and put in a 4.2 metre steel, then widened the window opening at the end for a pair of steel-framed doors. The cabinets were made in our workshop in St Philips and sprayed on site. The island is oak, fumed to darken it, with a honed limestone top that matches the floor.

We were without a kitchen for five weeks, a week less than planned. The one thing I’d change is the extractor, which is louder than we expected, but that was our choice of unit.
